WHAT IS PHONICS?
Phonics is one of the 5 basic reading skills. In the English language, phonics involves matching the sound each letter makes in a word with the printed letter on the page.

English words are actually a type of "code." In order to read, students must be able to "crack the code" - or DECODE the words.

For example, if students sees the letters "c a t" on the page, they should know that the "c" makes the "kuh" sound, the "a" makes the "ah" sound, and the "t" makes the "tuh" sound. When they put those sounds together, they are "decoding" the word cat.

However, in order for students to decode or pronounce the word "cat", they must first learn the sound of each letter. This is the 1st reading skill called PHONEMIC AWARENESS.
Phonics is the 2nd reading skill that students must learn in order to be successful readers.
